Open Text Corp. and Permabit Inc. have released software for managing documents and other information that must be kept to meet legal requirements.

Open Text's Livelink ECM - Litigation Management was built with TDCI, a company that specializes in large-scale electronic discovery and litigation case management. Permabit's Dynamic Information Services platform is for long-term retention and retrieval of information for litigation support, compliance and governance.

New features in Release 3 of the Permabit DIS, which shipped Wednesday, include a new discovery module that enables users to find and retrieve information based on metadata and content search. The new module leverages technology developed by FAST Search and Transfer.

Discovery is part of the pre-trial litigation process in which parties in a lawsuit can request relevant information and documents from the other side in an attempt to find pertinent facts.

Other features in Permabit DIS include an improved interface that offers a customizable view of information-centric business analytics. In addition the software's better management features can be used to maximize system utilization, predict capacity requirements, and verify the system's adherence to corporate governance and compliance regulations.

New security features include support for Microsoft Active Directory-based authentication and access control for Windows environments, as well as Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and Network Information Service (NIS) for Linux and UNIX environments.

Permabit DIS is available now. Pricing was not disclosed.

Open Text's Livelink ECM - Litigation Management integrates the Chicago-based company's records management software with TCDI's litigation support application ClarVergence.

The combined software enables businesses to manage discovery in-house as litigation arises, and to put in place a program of long-term, proactive management of content -- from informal email to formal contracts -- that may be subject to discovery. The later process helps companies determine which content to keep and which to throw away based on regulations and pre-determined policies. The less information kept, the less information available to litigators.

The new product is available now. Pricing was not disclosed.

Is Gartner's Quadrant the Problem, Or Is It How It's Used?
Bashing Gartner's Magic Quadrants seems to be a popular industry pastime, but in truth, I kind of like the quadrants. My biggest gripe is in how the quadrants are used, not necessarily the quadrants themselves...
