Open Text Corp. launches an upgrade of its suite of collaboration software.

Open Text Corp. on Tuesday launched an upgrade of its suite of collaboration software.

The FirstClass Collaboration Suite 8.3 includes support for mobile users, workspaces for small workgroups and other new features, officials with Chicago-based Open Text said. The collaboration suite can be used in conjunction with Open Text's content management software.

First Class provides a secure, networked environment that offers email, instant messaging, calendars, contact management, workgroup collaboration, document sharing, file storage, web publishing, blogging, podcasting, and unified voice and fax messaging.

New features in the upgrade include support for SyncML, a standard from the Open Mobile Alliance that provides bi-directional wireless syncing of contacts, calendars and tasks with devices. The specification is supported in many advanced mobile phones.

In addition, the new software includes Workspaces that provide templates for shared content, such as a discussion conference, calendar, contact database, document storage and bookmarks folder.

"FirstClass Collaboration Suite 8.3 is a significant leap forward for our customers," John Myers, vice president and general manager of the FirstClass division for Open Text, said in a statement.

Pricing for the upgrade was not disclosed.
